1. The Bird House

After a day of fly-fishing Eleven Mile Reservoir and exploring Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, one of the state’s premier dark-sky regions, soak in the jetted hot tub, sip a nightcap fireside, and watch the Milky Way seep through the heavens.
3. Hemingway’s Hideout & Kerouac Cabin

Why rent one lodge when you can secure your own compound? Nestled near Purgatory Resort and an embarrassment of mountain biking trails, these adjacent cabins are designed to “inspire creativity,” owner Kevin Wright says, with writing tables, cozy fireplaces, and walls of glass aimed at the San Juans. Each has a private hot tub, but rent both and you can share a cedar sauna—and a very good long weekend.
4. Sunset View A-Frame

You don’t need a full tank of gas to get gone at this renovated 1977 A-frame. Ninety minutes from Denver, it delivers deep-woods isolation on three private acres with straight-shot views to the Continental Divide. The vibe is equal parts alpine and retro, with midcentury furnishings, a record player, and a groovy fireplace. But the real draw is the outdoor space, where a hot tub and fire pit overlook the Mosquito Range and the backside of Breckenridge. Owner Beth Koloski has hidden miniature handmade ceramic creatures around the property to keep little sleuths occupied.

Big groups in search of a proper Breck base camp can claim this luxurious abode near downtown. Take the free bus to tool around Main Street or hitch a gondola ride to explore Peak 8’s hiking trails (free) and lift-accessed mountain biking ($56 for a day pass). Then return to this brand-new five-bedroom retreat for post-adventure hangs. The modern alpine pad has two living rooms, an open kitchen, and a game room on the lower level complete with a pool table, arcade console, and kitchenette. Outside, two patios, twin fire pits, a hot tub, and a built-in grill turn evenings into their own event.
